Mad Men Giveaway: Season 3 DVD Box Set

Posted by Jane Boursaw in contests, tv on July 6th, 2010 |  No Comments »

mad-men-jon-hamm-don-draperMad Men’ is one of those shows I started watching about a year after it premiered. I watched season one on DVD, catching up to watch seasons two and three in real time.

Season four premieres Sunday, July 25 at 10/9c on AMC, and I’m giving away the Season Three DVD Box Set to celebrate! Hop over to my movie blog, Film Gecko, for all the details on how to enter.

I’m absolutely in love with ‘Mad Men.’ It’s stylish, it features a bunch of great characters, and it captures the 1960s era beautifully, from the fedoras to the Jackie O styles (check out the ‘Mad Men’ fashions).

If you’re not familiar with the show, it follows the drama at one of New York’s most prestigious ad agencies in the 1960s. The focal point is Don Draper (Jon Hamm), who’s mysterious and dashing and talented. His wife, Betty (January Jones), is an ice queen who’s ready to implode with pent-up housewife angst.

mad-men-season-3-dvdThe colorful characters at the agency include Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss), Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser – you’ve seen him as Angel’s son on ‘Angel’), the buxom Joan Holloway (Christina Hendricks), and  Roger Sterling (John Slattery, who’s been in just about every show on TV).

For all the details on how to enter the giveaway, visit my Film Gecko blog.

Can’t wait? Buy ‘Mad Men’ Season 3 on Amazon.

DVD Review: ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ – a favorite romantic comedy!

Posted by Jane Boursaw in movies on February 7th, 2010 |  1 Comment »

how_to_lose_a_guy_in_10_days_dvd ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ is one of those completely predictable movies, but one I can watch over and over and not get bored with it.

Really, there’s not much you can do with the romantic comedy formula, so it all comes down to the chemistry of the two leads. Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey have plenty of it.

Ben (McConaughey) makes a bet with his boss that he can get a woman to fall in love with him in ten days to land a valuable advertising campaign. Andie Anderson (Hudson) is the "How To…" columnist for a women’s magazine, Composure. The topic of her next column is How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, hence the title of the movie.

But Andie yearns to write more indepth, serious stories, so if she does a good job with this piece, her boss will give her complete freedom to write whatever she wants.

As luck would have it, Ben and Andie see each other at a bar and coincidentally choose each other as their “victims.” The rest is history.

Hudson, as usual, is completely adorable. And McConaughey plays the guy he usually plays in all his movies, but I’m fine with that because I love that sort of roguish character who gets the girl in the end.

Directed by Donald Petrie, ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ is rated PG-13 for some sex related material. The Deluxe Edition (buy it here) was released Aug. 25, 2009 and includes the following bonus features.

  • How to Make a Movie in 2 Years
  • Why the Sexes Battle
  • Girls Night Out
  • Commentary by director Donald Petrie
  • Music Video: ‘Somebody Like You’ by Keith Urban
  • Deleted Scenes with Director’s Commentary

‘Adventureland’ – The cool little movie that no one saw

Posted by Jane Boursaw in movies on January 30th, 2010 |  No Comments »

adventureland_dvd I think that “Adventureland” was in theaters in my town for about one week. Or maybe less. I had planned to get out and see it, but time got away from me and it was gone before I knew it.

So I was glad to finally get a chance to check it out; it was released on DVD and Blu-ray Aug. 25, 2009. If you like movies about the 1980s or teens or quirky dramedy type of films, then you should definitely check it out.

It takes place in the 1980s and revolves around a recent college grad named James (Jesse Eisenberg), whose parents’ financial woes leave him stuck at home for the summer instead of roaming around Europe.

So he takes a job at a dilapidated theme park called Adventureland, where he mixes with a motley crew of misfits and free spirits, including Em (Kristen Stewart), who has a complicated past, a dysfunctional family life, and an odd relationship with the park’s fix-it guy Mike (Ryan Reynolds).

Running the park are offbeat owners Paulette and Bobby (scene stealers Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader), who despite their roughshod appearance seem to look out for their employees.

More after the jump, including a trailer…

The Proposal with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds hits DVD today

Posted by Jane Boursaw in celebrities, movies on October 13th, 2009 |  3 Comments »

the_proposal_poster "The Proposal” hits DVD today! I put the exclamation mark, because my daughter and I really loved this movie, and actually ended up seeing it twice in the theater. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds have great chemistry, but the real scene stealer is Betty White, who plays Reynolds’ grandmother.

The story follows an uptight corporate staffer, Margaret (Bullock), who needs to get married in order to avoid being deported back to Canada. So she ropes her assistant Andrew (Reynolds) into getting married, but things go awry when they travel to Alaska to visit his family, who decides that the happy couple should get married right then and there.

Read my full review here.

Bonus Features: There aren’t a ton of extras on the deluxe version, but included is a gag reel, two deleted scenes, writer and director commentary, and an alternate ending. Andrew tries to relay a romantic message to Margaret on the departing plane. In the process of the message being comically garbled by the stewardess and the control tower guy, the INS agent causes a stir, gets tasered, and forces the plane to turn around. Margaret and Andrew are reunited and their love is declared in time for the happy ending.

I sort of expected that to happen in the film, so I’m glad they went with the ending they used instead. I mean, you pretty much knew they’d get together at some point.

Buy the Deluxe DVD Edition + Digital Copy, $22.99

Buy the Single-Disc Widescreen Edition, $15.99

Buy the Blu-ray Edition, $25.99

If you need a tote bag with lots of space for all your essential stuff, the Madison Angela Satchel from eBags.com is the one for you. It’s also super cute and easy to carry around, wherever you go.

This bag is also very similar to the ones Jennifer Aniston carries, though probably a lot less expensive! Lots of colors available, too.
